Credit Card Shenanigans

Being in Antarctica is weird, because you can travel back and forth between the “United States” (McMurdo) and “New Zealand” (Scott Base) in less than an hour.

Credit card companies have a hard time with this.

Each station runs its infrastructure through its respective country, which leads to absurd situations.

For example, I grabbed some stuff from the McMurdo store…

Then a short time later, I went over to Scott Base and got a drink at their bar.

Obviously this is fraud… right? Two Card Present transactions over the course of mere hours, in countries (supposedly) thousands of miles apart?

Fraud

I’m sure their model flagged this with high confidence, and I threw them a curveball by reporting this as “not fraud”.

The fraud team at Capital One is having a very weird day.

Until next time!
